The Aston Martin DB6 is a grand tourer made by British car manufacturer Aston Martin and was produced from September 1965 to January 1971. The "DB" designation is from the initials of David Brown who built up the company from 1947 onwards.

Aston produced the sharp-edged DBS alongside the DB6. Getty Images. Thing is, while the DB6 was on sale for five years, from 1965 to 1970, throughout its pomp there was a pretender to the throne, on which Beach and Aston Martin designer William Towns were working almost in tandem with the DB6.

Aston Martin launched the DB6 at the 1965 London Motor Show. This was the final evolution of the DB4 based models and it was effectively built on a lengthened DB5 chassis to ensure the car could seat four adults. Externally the front of the DB6 is similar to its predecessors, however, in profile and from the rear the car is easily identifiable.

Obviously derived from the DB5, the DB6 launched in October 1965 was built on a longer wheelbase with a slightly higher roofline, giving extra head and leg room in both front and rear seats.

The Aston Martin DB6 debuted in 1965 at the London Motor Show as the successor to the Aston Martin DB5. The DB6 featured a rear-end Kamm-style design, not unlike the rear-end design of the Ferrari 250.

Over to Martin Brewer, proprietor of the Runnymede Motor Company in the Thames Valley, which specialises in DB Aston Martin service and often has DB6s for sale. "I think the DB6 became a more usable car, especially for the man with a family," he says.

Before the DB6 Volante arrived, Aston Martin offered what they called the Short-Chassis Volante; a series of 37 cars that used up the leftover short wheelbase DB5 Convertible bodyshells. The DB6 was built with a 95mm longer wheelbase than the DB5 in order to provide more interior space. The new car was also more expensive than its predecessor.
