Pilgrimage. Out of the miracle of June 14, 1738, when tears were seen on the face of the Scourged Saviour, there rapidly developed a pilgrimage of unexpected proportions. In his 1779 booklet "Wahrer Ursprung und Fortgang der Wallfahrt des Gegeißelten Heilands auf der Wies" ("The True Origin and Continuation of the Pilgrimage to the Scourged.

General info The Pilgrimage Church of Wies (in German Wieskirche or the full name: " Wallfahrtskirche zum Gegeißelten Heiland auf der Wies ")) is an oval rococo church from the late 1740s designed by brothers Johann Baptiste and Dominikus Zimmermann. It is located in the Bavarian foothills of the Alps, in Steingaden in Germany.

An absolutely breathtaking church we visited while in Bavaria. Called The Pilgrimage Church of Wies, also Pilgrimage Church of the Scourged Saviour (German: Wieskirche) it is an oval.

Jesus' tears stroke the world and the statue was brought to the small wooden chapel in Wies, near Munich , Bavaria . Too many pilgrims coming to pray and get forgiveness from our Lord made local congregation start constructing the church which aimed to glorify Jesus' sacrifice and love. The church was constructed by two German architects.

The Wieskirche is regarded as the pinnacle of Bavarian Rococo architecture and indeed is one of the most beautiful Rococo churches I've ever seen. However, I would rate it only as something special for real Rococo buffs (or those really interested in religious pilgrimage) as this region of Bavaria is dotted with Rococo churches.
