The Piazzale Michelangelo is an 1860 square by Giuseppe Poggi and is full of replicas of Michelangelo statues, including a second copy of the David (the original is in the Accademia Gallery ). The Piazza is located on a hill, giving you a beautiful 360 degree view of Florence and the surrounding area.

A number of other attractions can be found in the Piazzale Michelangelo District. Just a short walk uphill is the spectacular Romaneque San Miniato Church. An equally short walk down the hill leads to another piazza with a lovely restaurant. Further down, on the route back to central Florence, is a very pretty rose garden.

The Rose Garden. Located just below the Piazzale Michelangelo, the Rose Garden is one of the loveliest gardens in Florence and probably the most romantic. Built by Giuseppe Poggi in 1865, it includes about 1000 botanical varieties and 350 species of ancient roses. Open all year round from 9.00 am until sunset - with the exception of Christmas.

Michelangelo was an Italian Renaissance Man with a multitude of skills - he was an architect, a sculptor, a painter, and a poet. Born in Tuscany, Michelangelo spent his entire life working between Florence and Rome. He died in Rome (at age 89, still working on a sculpture!), but his real home and final resting place are in Florence.
