โข Thousand Palms: The name of the largest of the palm oases says it all. Although in 1865 it was known as Hundred Palms, by the 1890s, that number had increased to warrant the name Thousand Palms. This oasis featured not only many palms but also a large pond on the north end. In 1919, desert wanderer and chronicler J. Smeaton Chase remarked.

The area was specifically preserved in 1986 but its history was unclear according to Robert Joplin, a long-time docent at the Thousand Palms Oasis Preserve. Joplin relates an interesting tale.
